MUSCLE ENERGY TECHNIQUE (MET)
Post Isometric Relaxation (PIR)
Improve your rehabilitation and treatment outcomes using Muscle Energy Techniques with our MET PIR course.
MET is used to treat somatic dysfunction, especially decreased range of motion, muscular hypertonicity and pain.
One of the aims of this MET PIR workshop is to encourage your independence of thought so that you can confidently apply MET to any area of the body.
We also offer a follow-on day to this workshop called MET Reciprocal Inhibition (RI).
WHAT WILL YOU ACHIEVE?
- An understanding of the physiological effects of MET
- An understanding of the mechanism of the technique
- The ability to apply safe and effective MET PIR to lower limb
- The confidence to workout its' application in most given circumstances
- The ability and understanding of when to apply passive and active MET to lower limb
- The appropriate understanding of when to apply it and its' contraindications
- The ability to test range of motion for hip, knee and ankle
WHAT IS MET?
MET is a collective name of techniques that focus on stretching, strengthening and the breaking down of adhesions.
It has a number of uses:
- To reduce muscle hypertonicity
- To improve circulation
- To aid in the re-alignment of muscle fibres
- To lengthen a short or tightened muscle fibres
- To strengthen a physiologically weakened muscle or group of muscles
- To help restore proprioception within the muscles

What is the difference between MET PIR and MET RI?
MET Post Isometric Relaxation (PIR):
- Post = After
- Isometric = A static muscle contraction
- Relaxation = relaxation of the target muscle
In layman’s terms: After a static muscle contraction, a period of relaxation occurs. At this point of the relaxation, we are able to change the muscles length.
MET Reciprocal Inhibition (RI):
- Reciprocal = help from the opposing muscle
- Inhibition = switching off of target muscle
In layman’s terms: With help from the opposing muscle, the switching off of our target muscle occurs. At this point, we can change the muscles length.
