MUSCLE ENERGY TECHNIQUE (MET)
RECIPROCAL INHIBITION (RI)
Develop powerful skills and increase your ability to be precise using Muscle Energy Techniques.
Muscle Energy Technique is used to treat somatic dysfunction, especially decreased range of motion, muscular hypertonicity and pain.
One of the aims of the workshop is to encourage your independence of thought so that you can confidently apply MET to any area of the body.
This is Day 2 of our MET bundle. You must have completed the Muscle Energy Technique – PIR before attending this MET RI workshop.
WHAT WILL YOU ACHIEVE?
- An understanding of the physiological effects of MET
- An understanding of the mechanism of the technique
- The ability to apply safe and effective RI to the upper limb
- The confidence to workout its' application in most given circumstances
- Review how to apply PIR to the lower limb
- The ability and understanding of when to apply passive and active MET to lower limb
- The appropriate understanding of when to apply it and its' contraindications
- The ability to test range of motion for A/C, S/C and GH joints

What does reciprocal inhibition mean?
As we explained on our MET PIR page, RI means “With help from the opposing muscle the switching off of our target muscle occurs.” The opposing muscle is known as the ‘Antagonist’.
When using RI we need to approach the technique in a slightly different way to PIR. The target muscle is still the one we are looking to stretch but we reduce its stimulation by activating its Antagonist.
In the image you can see two muscles. The one to the right of the boney structure with the green lines is our target muscle for lengthening. The muscle to the left with the blue lines is therefore our Antagonist which we need to activate.
In this one-day workshop, you’ll learn how to implement this process so that the target muscle becomes relaxed and easier to move. We can then take advantage of this and lengthen the muscle immediately after we relax its Antagonist.
